The plight of the poor bread heels is a sad one. Everyone avoids them. No one wants them. Sometimes they even get thrown away, destined to live a life rotting away at the bottom of the trash (or compost heap).
But there is hope! repurposeful is starting a Save Our Bread Heels (SOBH) campaign so that bread heels across the globe can once again find purpose and lead a more fulfilling (albeit short) life. Won’t you join me? Leave a comment with your best ideas for using bread heels. Let’s show the world (or perhaps, just my readers) that bread heels don’t have to be needlessly thrown out!

Here, I’ll get us started. Inspired by a post I saw at Make & Takes, I use my heels turned inside out (so no one knows the difference) for a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Before I learned that little trick, the heels were used for last resort toast. Anything toasted and smothered with jam tastes just fine!

They are great for feeding ducks….make a small collection in the freezer, and tada, whenever u get ready to go feed the ducks, thaw them and u are ready to go!
They make great french toast, or dry them for breadcrumbs. Cube them and toss them with oil and parmesan, then broil for croutons. I swear heels make better cheese toast than the middle slices.
I keep a bag in the freezer of bits of bread to use for bread crumbs (or stuffing). I add to it and take from it as needed. The frozen bread grinds fine in the coffee grinder (although I have a separate one I just use for spices, grains, breads since the coffee one is always coated in coffee).
Thanks for the link! This is a great series. I have another post about what to do with those tough ends: Homemade Bread Crumbs! http://www.makeandtakes.com/homemade-bread-crumbs
I use them to make sandwiches. It took a bit to get used to but after that it tastes just like bread.
I also save them and make crutons out of them or better yet – bread pudding!
Everyone can send me their bread heels-it’s the only part of bread I like!
They don’t last but a moment in my house. I love them!
In my family, we fight over the heels – they have more flavor than the rest of the loaf, and in the case of French or Italian breads, much more crunch. If any of you want to send me your bread heels, I’ll give you my address
we feed them to the turtles at our favorite park
Croutons! Cube the heels…drizzle with olive oil, oregano, garlic, thyme, whatever seasoning you like…stir to coat…pop them in the oven for 10 minutes or so, checking on them and turning them every now and then until golden brown and toasty. WAY better than store bought!
They are chicken food at our house. Win, win- kids don’t want tham & the chickens love bread!

I save them in the freezer and use for stuffing. The stores charge crazy prices for bread cubes.
I use bread heels(or plain slices) under meat loaf to absorb the grease when baking.
