It’s probably safe to say that most of us think deer are cute — even beautiful — creatures. When I see deer in my neighborhood (which happens often), it reminds me that even though I live in a house, in a developed town, I’m still living on borrowed ground.

That being said, deer can also cause big problems when it comes to your garden. Unless you have a fence, you’ll need to find a way to keep the deer at bay.
Two natural ways to keep deer away from your plants and garden
Cocoa beans or powder. Deer don’t like the smell of cocoa, so by sprinkling cocoa beans or powder around the area you want to protect, the scent will deter snacking deer.
Human hair. This works best if you regularly give haircuts at home — I don’t suggest asking your hairdresser for a “doggy bag” at your next visit. Anyway, human hair sprinkled around the perimeter of your plants gives off a human scent which sends a steer clear signal to deer.
Do you have any other natural and safe tricks for keeping deer away from your yard?

It is not the deer but the rabbits eating my yard up. Would appreciate some helpful hints for that!
LOVE your blog! So helpful
I do not have a deer problem, but my sister has a nasty gopher problem: Arghh! She needs some help, because it has eaten all her tomato plants.
Patricia & Pamela – I plan to do a post on natural repellents for different animals soon. Check back!
I know of one deer repellent…urine. My husband just ‘marks his territory’.
Try “scarecrow sprinkler” detects a deer detects an animal heat and movement then instantly releases a short but startling burst of water. The sudden spray of water and the movement and noise of the sprinkler scares deer away.

I have found that using kitty litter that has already been used is working. I went all around the out side of the garden and then I used dry donkey BOO-BOO on the inside so between the two we have a perfume I call Midnight By The Sewer. I really don’t care what it smells like as long as I get to harvest the corn, beans, melons, peas, pumpkins from my garden in the forest. I just keep adding more kitty litter to the wall especially if it rains.
