In the dog days of summer, we run our A/C almost all day long, turning it up only in the evening when it’s cooler outside. As I was walking around the outside of our house earlier this week, I noticed that the A/C condensation line drips water constantly. Seemed like a waste of good water to me! I slid an empty milk jug underneath and in one day, I had a full jug — perfect for watering my tomato plants!
Another way to collect water

That’s a great idea! I’m doing to give this a try. I hate wasting water with a passion.
I allow the water from my AC to fill a pan so that my chickens always have free fresh water. And because my 96% efficient gas furnace produces water during the heating months my chickens have water year round. And the excess water that runs out of the pan keeps my Spearmint patch well watered.
I wonder if this is legal in states like Colorado where you need to have a well permit just to be allowed to collect rain water off your roof. Its illegal to collect rain water falling on another part of your property no matter what or at all without water rights.
To keep my plants watered I keep a watering can by my sink. When I am waiting for the water to heat up to do dishes or cool to drinking temperature, I fill the watering can (or sometimes the cat’s water dish). In the winter when I just have my houseplants, this is more than enough water for them. But in the summer when my balcony is full of veggies, I have to run extra for them. I’m thinking of doing the same thing with a larger watering can when I shower and wait for the temp to adjust, but unfortunately my thinking times and showering times don’t happen at the same time.
