I don’t make this stuff up, people. There are folks out there who are so resourceful that they reuse the pickle juice left when all of the dills are gone. I would have never thought about repurposing pickle juice, but a loyal reader wrote in asking, “I hate to just dump out the leftover, flavorful pickle juice — so now I have four jars worth of pickle juice (sans pickles) in my fridge. Any ideas?” Personally, no — I had no clue! But here are a few ideas that I dug up.

Re-pickle. They won’t be exactly the same as before, but you can put fresh or blanched veggies in pickle juice to soak up some of the flavor. Be sure to refrigerate. You can also pickle hard-boiled eggs in the leftover juice.
Liven up homemade bread, potato salad, bbq sauce, hummus and more! Add a dash (or more) of pickle juice to some of your favorite recipes… go ahead, be bold and experiment! You might just like it better than the original.
Marinade or salad dressing. Add pickle juice to a marinade recipe or use it on its own — same goes for salad dressing. Although I think you might want to add a little oil to it for salad dressing. Just a thought.
This may sound totally weird, but my grandma used to hard-boil and peel eggs, and place them in a large jar with 1/2 sweet pickle juice and 1/2 pickled beet juice.
2 weeks later- the most unbelievable pickled eggs. I particularly loved them as a girl, as they were pink. =)
She would slice them into salads and/or serve them with sandwiches. I have only attempted this once in adulthood, and it was great. I’m just too impatient and try to avoid the cholesterol?! Agh, the bummers of being an adult =P
Yes, I’ve sliced up just regular cucumbers, as thin as I could get them, and put them into the pickle jar and close it back up for 2 days or so. I’ve only done this with bread and butter pickle juice. You get something that’s a cross between marinated cucumbers, or extra fresh bread and butter pickles. It tastes pretty darn good!
The same can be done with hot pepper juice, mild pepper juice, any kind of pickling juice. Hard boiled eggs in jalapeno juice – – – – whew. Good stuff.
i wonder if you could use it to water plants? I use the water I boil veggies in… I hear the nutrients from the veggies that get into the water is good for the plants.
In a pickle no longer!
Thank you kindly!!
I sprinkle it over chips rather than using fresh vinager. Hardly healthy, but good recycling!
I always heard that pickle juice should be added to potato salad (or was that egg salad?) for flavor. I guess it depends on whether it’s dill pickle or sweet pickle juice. Also, it might taste good mixed into tuna salad.
Polish Pickle Rye Bread. YUMMMMMMMM!!

My kids love this bread, it is awesome!
I wouldn’t use it to water plants. Most name brands of pickles, such as Vlasic, have MSG in them.
I hadn’t thought of hard-boiled eggs. May have to give that a try…..
I add it to my tuna salad, since it adds a nice tang and reduces the amount of mayo I need to use. I also put it in my chopped veggie salad.
People actually consider THROWING AWAY pickle juice!??!!? … fainting … LOL
I think it’s awesome in potato salad and cole slaw, also .. slice up fresh cucumbers and let them soak for a couple of days … or … cooked (in the pressure cooker) sliced beets soaked in the juice is good too. Blanched carrots, sliced or chunked make nice ‘pickles’.
Julie Andrea
Great to use when you are making cole slaw!
I always use pickle juice when I make deviled eggs. It’s a nice way to jazz them up a bit.
Dare I admit…? I drink it! !
I’m with Michelle. I drink it-it’s supposed to actually be good for you! The vinegar and garlic can’t hurt (but I suppose the billion grams of sodium aren’t the best for me…).
Believe it or not in Texas people have been freezing pickle juice and giving them to their kids. The very hot humid temps can be dehydrating and the kids love them. That started me on the journey to find out if the rest of the world liked the idea. It appears so. We are building a company around the bizarre idea and it seems to be working. Wild. There are a lot of closet pickle juice drinkers out there. Just type in Pickle Pops in Google.
[…] blog post on pickle […]
My grandmother used to make pickled eggs all the time. I would just eat them for a snack…lol! She used leftover juice from pickled sausages and added a little red food coloring. I have a jar of kosher dill pickle juice and I was concerned as to whether it would work using that to pickle the eggs, but I think I’ll give it a shot, thanks 🙂
I have just read; NOT good idea to reuse pickle juice for plants as there is salt in it and—will kill the roots of your plants. I want to try another idea given to put pickle juice in a spray bottle and put on your weed to kill them (like sidewalk weeds) as will kill the lawn if you spray it.
I just had some pickle relish juice in a egg salad sandwich, a deli secret I read too. The juice can be reused in mariandes, or sauce, or gravy for any type of meat, corned beef, beef, chicken, fish, even hot dogs, brats, etc will give taste and tenderize it. Also, in beans, salad dressings, sandwich spreads, steam your veggies in; or, just drop in the pickle juice boiled eggs, green tomatoes, onions (I doing that today), any hard veggies, another idea was feta cheese, etc anything you might like the pickled favor too. But, most surprizingly, sports pepple have used for awhile for sport drink, (actually reported as pickle juice in 30% higher in those eletrohydrates than gatorade to rehydrate etc), than too there was a baseball figure who used to sook his has to prevent blister from forming before a game. REALLY.
I love pickles, but rather have myself a sip of black olive juice.
I just tried my homemade dill pickle juice over potatoes chips, really really really good. Much better than the very salty store pickle favored kind. I did also put in the pickle juice from my homemade pickle relish hard boiled eggs (removing the shells and promptly put shells in the garden), purple onion & garlic (course removed the outer peelings), and also those mini green tomatoes (since I have tons that haven’t ripen it will be great if my hubby likes them),
PS: for my above posting..my bad…should have reread posting; but, the sport guy “soaked his hands” in pickle juice so he wouldn’t get blisters.
Yikes! I forgot just been reading on the recipes, too many, for a Polish soup “Zupa Ogorkowa” that can be creamy or not, with or without potatoes, with or without meat, all using pickles and pickles juice.
I gotz to try it. I went to a Polish Food Festival in Ashton, NE, and there were many soups, and pierogies that were out of this world, so good..so must try this soup for sure with pickle juice.
I’ve been using left over pickle juice to give a great flavour to fresh bacon before smoking. I’ thinking it would be excellent for making corned beef, hams etc. I just marinate the meat covered in the juice for a couple of days in the fridge, then smoke it for 3 or 4 hours with maple sawdust.
I add chopped jalapenos, habaneros, garlic and fresh dill to the pickle juice, along with blanched green beans. OMG they are spectacular. Also works with asparagus, cocktail onions, and brussels sprouts! I love bloody marys and they are a wonderful garnish for sunday brunches with the boyfriend. But I do love eating them by themselves, too.
But also, after all of the juice is gone, pickle jars are perfect for storing soups. I always have trouble storing a large batch of soup, but the jars work so well!
My Dad always claimed that pickle juice is good for heartburn. He he drinks it when he has indigestion.
We also use it in our potato salad which is a Thanksgiving Dinner favorite in our house. 🙂
This is a great post.. Very informative… I can see that you put a lot of hard work on your every post that’s why I think I’d come here more often. Keep it up! By the way, you can also drop by my blogs. They’re about Vegetable Gardening and Composting. I’m sure you’d find my blogs helpful too.
Actually pickle juice contains very much salt, so you should just drink a shot of it. I do that sometimes, the rest goes in the garden on the composter. Pickle juice is said to be very good against muscle cramps and also good to stay hydrated. Its a good alternative to soja sauce or salt in your food. I have to admit i like the pickles better than the juice 😉
I just love the taste of pickle juice, while others want to barf at the site. lol. But other than the great tastes i will re-use it for sports. Has a great amount of electrolytes!
A trick I learned from my mom, growing up…add a can of sliced beets and some sliced onion to the jar of juice. After a few days, you’ll have a delicious, marinated cold side dish!
I just tryed pickled eggs using leftover juice from costcos marinated artichoke hearts pickle juice and the juice from a jar of peperoncini, with peppers in the mix. Will let you know how they turn out
Drinking pickle juice is likely not good from the sodium, but unless it’s apple cider vinegar you’re drinking, you are most certainly acidifying your system more from the vinegar too. And considering how the more acidic your system gets the more vulnerable it is to disease and dysfunction, it’s not that good. I agree with you though, I have sipped the juice as I just LOVE it too!!
A couple thoughts is to use it to deglaze a pan while frying or use as a base for a dill vinegar sauce along with other spices. Maybe with some chicken? I wonder if it’d be good to fry mushrooms with onions in?
I would love to try pickling eggs in it! If it only lasted that long…I too drink it. A sip at a time but by the time the pickles are done, so too is the juice. Same goes for the hot pepper juice from the jar of peperoncini. I do like poring the juice onto my pizza plate for the bread to soak up……….SPICY AND YUMMY!
GREAT BLOG!! Thanks so much!
My grandmother would pickle her own beets, then use the juice to put boild eggs in. They were yummy.
I drink the juice if dill pickles, and I use it on my salads instead of salad dressings, much lower in calories, (yes, I know, the salt, the salt!!!)
My husband use to sell spicy hot dill pickles, which were higher priced than regular dills, so he would take a barrel of dills and put the pickles in the spicy juice, and in 2 or 3 days, more hot pickles at the same price as regular dills!
Vinegar and salt are both natural preservatives, so I think reusing the pickle juice is a great idea (especially dill, not too sure about sweet!)
I actually only buy sweet pickles for their juice.. I use it to make dressing for pasta salad, coleslaw, or anything else that uses vinegar.. it makes it much tastier!
okra is my favorite pickle–though it takes a bit longer to soak up the juice but you can cut the caps off to shorten time—and dont forget baby ears of corn.MMMMMM!
Michelle, it is great to drink a little pickle juice, especially at night before you go to bed if you have GERD…it helps the stomach acids and fluids to settle. Read this on a website somewhere….
Judy
I have an herb/veggie garden and just picked okra…they are beautiful..pretty big…do you think they would be good if I just put them in left over pickle juice? I don’t want to go through the pickling process…thought this might work?
Judy
True story! My father has heart problems and they work to keep his blood pressure very low. Once, when his meds worked too well and it got too low, he began to feel faint. My father’s cardio doc instructed him to try a shot of pickle juice to bring his pressure up, which did the trick within a few mins. While not “leftover” pickle juice, it was certainly the most novel use for pickle juice I had ever heard. Thought I would pass it on! =D
(sorry if some of these were already said, but this is what i’ve done with it in the past for dill as i never buy sweet..!) 🙂
1. ADD TO CHICKEN SALAD
2. ADD TO COLESLAW
3. ADD TO TUNA SALAD (THE BEST!!!)
4. RE-USE AS A PICKLING BRINE FOR: GREEN TOMATOES, PEARL ONIONS, CARROTS, ONIONS, HARD-BOILED EGGS, CAULIFLOWER, ARTICHOKE HEARTS, ASPARAGUS, GREEN BEANS…
**i blanche the sliced carrots and cauliflower florets briefly before throwing them into the juice along with little pearl onions.. add a jalapeno and some extra white vinegar and you will be amazed!!!! 🙂
I thin slice beef and put it in the pickle juice, in as little as one hour it is wonderfully tender. I tend to like my meat raw, but cooked is safer of course. Any cuts of beef will work including tongue. Once the meat is done I like it with crackers and cream cheese. A little goes a long way, it’s a very nice appetizer. In the summer I like to freeze it into an ice cube tray and suck on the cubes when I feel hot and miserable.
I have just made lots of pickled eggs and again like the rest of you think its a waste.
After 6days the eggs can be eaten I am going to reuse the vinagar I shall boil first then cool and pour over new eggs. Let you know in 7days if they taste as good.
It will fix you up if you’re hungover.
My mom makes a dish with macaroni, ground beef, stewed tomatoes, garlic, diced pickle and pickle juice. Basically you cook up same macaroni, while that is cooking brown your ground beef with 2-5 cloves of minced garlic and a diced onion, once the ground beef is almost finished add 1-3 diced pickle dill pickles, after the macaroni and beef mixture is cooked add to a pot with the stewed tomatoe and about a quarter to a half cup of the pickle juice and heat until just heated and enjoy with some fresh multigrain bread-which is great for dunking into the juice from the mixture. Sound weird but all you pickle drinkers out there will probably love it. let me know if you try it out and what you think 😉
I am amazed at all of the uses for pickle juice. I have a question. I see people suggest using it to kill weeds, would it kill Poison Ivy?
Makes a great liquid base for chili…Pickle juice and beef broth
or tomato sauce….mmmm good!
Pickle juice can be used to stop heartburn too.
dickelbutter
butter and pickel juice mix up 2gether makes great
spread for toast
I’m a big fan of hamburgers, hotdog, submarine sandwiches almost anything between bread. I keep a jar of pickled sliced onions that I use in place of pickles even go as far as reusing jalapeno pickled juice for a spicy bacon cheeseburger. =D
Just wanted to say that the brine being reused is diluted and that the biggest dilution involved is the salt content. The whole process of brining is made possible by the fact that salt attracts water, effectively ‘dehydrating’ the fresh water out of the cukes, while simultaneously re-hydrating them, as the fresh water contained in the cukes is drawn out and exchanged with the salt solution from the outside. This process continues until equilibrium is achieved, which means your brine is most certainly diluted.
I do reuse commercial pickle juice but I add a rounded teaspoon of kosher salt and a tablespoon or two of distilled white vinegar (per jar) back into the solution beforehand. Works like a charm.
you can use the pickle juice as a chaser for tequila. it’s great. it’s called a puerto rican hooker and it totally kills the taste of the tequila. so if you have cheap tequila that you want to get drunk from but don’t want to taste, the pickle juice is great!
I love pickle juice, especially Claussen. I also have done all of the above with the left over juice. I mostly have a sip or two if I feel dehydrated. It’s great in tomato juice over ice with your favorite spices or as a bloody mary.
I used to work in the food industry and cooks would use pickle juice to clean their grills. Smelled awful but it did the trick. GO PICKLE JUICE!
I know how NOT to reuse pickle juice…as a lice treatment, oh, no! I finally learned that nothing really kills them, natural nor chemical, because they’re so resistant, esp their eggs. Save yourself all the labor & frustration by using a professional service that actually REMOVES every one of them. I’m in California & was really relieved by the company Pixie Locks. The tech taught me everything about lice & how to do it myself even in the future.
Thanks for the grill cleaning tip, Kirk, it worked 🙂
I use leftover pickle juice in my potato salad and the mixture for deviled eggs it not only lightens it but gives lotz of flavor! My husband usually drinks the pickle juice – I questioned why but I read about the ways that it is used for sports drink to replenish dehydration and leg cramps. I want to buy separate but can’t find it anywhere so next year when I do my canning I am going to put up just pickle juice for me so he can’t get to it.
I’m not sure if I’m the only one who does this, but I absolutely LOVE pickle juice on my mashed potatoes. Gives them lots of flavor, and most times I just skip the usual butter, salt and pepper and go straight for the pickles!
I used to re-use my pickle juice all the time but now I have a husband who can’t seem to keep his dirty fingers out of the jar during his midnight kitchen raids! Arg… perhaps I should send him this posting?
I use dill juice or caper juice in homemade tartar sauce. Works great for an extra tang.
I use dill pickle juice in a recipe with beans & brown sugar and it adds a new zip to boring beans. I’d like to just make pickle juice from scratch — not use left over juice. Do any of you have input on how to make the “new” juice that would be just as good left over juice?
My husband drinks pickle juice [Claussen Kosher Dill] with vodka and soda…and habanero stuffed olives! What a man!
It is also good on bee stings and misquito bites
I just used leftover artichoke juice to cook wheat berries. It adds flavor and tang.
put dill jucie in a small spray bottle, and spritz generic regular potato chips. Not much is needed or they will get soggy pop them in the oven at 450′ for about 5 minutes and you have a bag Dill Chips for halff the price
Kosher Dill Cracker Dip
3 ounces kosher dill pickle juice
1 whole kosher pickle chopped
1 package of cream cheese (room temperature)
Mix together. Eat with crackers, pork rinds, etc…
It’s quick, easy and soo good!
I am a newbie to the world of pickle juice…I can’t wait to try out some of the recipes above! You guys are great!!! Thank you.
I live in Tx and it gets hot here in the summer, so I always just freeze some pickle juice and make a Popsicle out of it! Kids love it, and it tastes good and cools you down!
Use it to brine chicken for frying!
See here: http://journdejourn.blogspot.com/2012/04/frying-for-chicken-tender-hearted.html
I included a link to this blog page in the post. 😉
When I buy the expensive deli pickles (the ones that come refrigerated) I always save the juice and then slice up cucumbers to soak for a couple of days. Delicious!
Some one told me you could use the pickle mix in water and spray on your plants to kill bugs and it also is good for the plants growth but after readying all these post maybe not. Would the mix have the same MSG, salt. etc. in it?
Does pickle juice spoil?
You can drink it, especially if you have been working in the heat. It will relieve leg cramps and pains that are caused by working in heat.
TRY TO GET PICKLES THAT CONTAIN SEA SALT NOT REFINED BECAUSE THE REFINED TABLE SALT CONTAINS ALUMINUM – BAD FOR YOUR BODY & ESP YOUR BRAIN 😦
My daughter used to work in a fast food restaurant. At the end of the day, they cleaned the grill with pickle juice!! It’s terrific! While the grill is still hot, pour some juice on it, as it bubbles, scrap the grill with a spatula, and all the dark color, etc., will lift off the grill and leave it looking clean and spotless!! It works good on your pots, and pans, too.
It also works great for BBQ grills. Just spray pickle juice on grill while it’s still hot, and scrape with wire brush when you are done grilling. Get’s all the grease and gunk off the grill.
Does anyone know how well using left-over jalapeno juice to make a hot pickle from a fresh garden cucumber would work? Any suggestions?
Vinegar is a natural alternative to weed killer…so no, don’t water your plants with it. It’s far too acidic.
use a few teaspoons of dill pickle juice in a bloody mary…
When I lived in South Florida, a neighbor told us that the secret to gorgeous, blooming bougainvilleas was to pour dill pickle juice on the roots. I had THE MOST blooms of the entire neighborhood!
I’m cooking corned beef in a crock pot. Just poured 1 1/2 jars of leftover “Claussen Hot & Spicy” pickle juice over the meat. Wish me luck! I think it will turn out awesome.
I’ve been putting ripe tomatoes into the pickle jars. Then a slimy/moldy film developes on the top. Is that OK? (I eat the delicious tomatoes anyway – and I’m still alive).
Yeah, richard that’s likely not a good idea… lol
If you’re going to reuse your used pickle vinegar make sure to add about a 1/4 cup or more of fresh vinegar to kick the acidity back up to kill the bacteria and to properly pickle whatever you put in it.
BTW to anybody whom really checked this forum out, I added some 7-8 inch cucumbers to the remaining “juice” from a few jars of jalapenos (w/out japs) added some white vinegar to restrengthen it, a dash of garlic, Parmesan, some cayenne (red pepper) powder and a few other spices for flavor…
After a little over 2 weeks, the pickle was spicy, flavorful, but still had that “dill pickle” flavor in the center. So everyone had to get a bite, then comment on it being spicy, then come back for another bite, then another lol
If you like Hot mammas, you should try this!
Looks like everyone has already used my ideas. I do buy the inexpensive beets and put them in bread ad butter or sweet pickle juice for a few days and they are fantastic. If you buy the pickled beets they are higher and this way you can use the leftover juice. I have always taken a couple of sips a day as am very athletic and it works as ACV. So glad to hear people are not throwing things out. More people need to heed these ides…Have a great sweet and sour pickle day!
I’ve put cooked shrimp in the pickle brine and they were delicious. I’m getting ready to pick all the small green tomatoes off my vines as it’s getting too cold for them to mature. I will cut them in half and put in the brine.
I live in South Florida and when I purchased my home the previous owner had the most beautiful giant rose blooms I had ever seen! i asked how they did it & the previous owner said “Pickle Juice!” I was stunned, but I love kosher Dill Pickles, so when I finished the next jar I poured the juice directly into the ground to get straight to the roots, careful not to get it on the plant. Sure enough, my rose bushes grew bigger & stronger w/beautiful blooms. Add the juice as a natural fertilizer. Not the whole jar on one plant, but enough to saturate around the bulb in the ground. Water as usual to move the juice down into the ground, then water as usual. In z few months you will xee Amazing results!

I just found an awesome use for pickle juice, it was from a recipe I found from the midwest. Take your normal raw grilling sausages, boil (low simmer) in pickle juice for 4-8 hours. Then throw them on the charcoal grill as normal.
I tried it recently and they came out fantastic (if you like pickle flavor). The long boil really softens them up – keeping them in one piece is challenging in fact – but gives them a marvellous pickle flavor and REALLY long pickle finish. I’ll be doing it again.
Drink it! Tastes yummy and helps with muscle cramps and hangovers.
didn’t read all comments but here goes- perfect Bloody Mary, add about one oz. Claussen Kosher Pickle juice. Perfect Bloody Mary condiments- fresh green beans, brussel sprouts, and mushrooms. Blanch beans and sprouts for one to two minutes, pack in Claussen Kosher Pickle juice. Throw in three cloves of garlic and a couple jalapeños, refrigerate for at least a couple weeks. Fraction of the cost of buying these already made and far better! Incidently, Kosher, in this case, simply means garlic added. And yes, only Claussen juice will do….
Hubby loves pickle juice over elbow macaroni. Anytime I make a salad like chicken, tuna, etc I add some pickle juice along with the pickle relish. Same goes for deviled eggs. When I worked at KFC many years ago the manager always added pickle juice to the slaw. That’s why their slaw tasted different than anywhere else. I think now though they get it from the factory. There’s even a slaw salad you make with mustard & vinegar. I bought some spirit vinegar at Amazon that’s used in commercial foods. It’s 25% acid instead of 5% and even then you have to dilute it by half because it’s so strong. I found this site looking for a receipe to use it in.
I use my left over pickle just as a marinade for steaks. can not always afford those pricey steaks so i purchase a lower grade and let them sit over night or even a couple of hours and you will have juicey tender steaks with no salt to be added. TASTES GREAT
Hi! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering if
you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form?
I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding one?
Thanks a lot!

i reuse my pickle when i cook my seafood. water, beer, pickle juice and old bay
I drink it also and freeve in ice trays with toothpicks in them. I wait till they are slushy in the freezer then add my toothpick. VERY GOOD once completely froze!
I soaked chicken breast in pickle juice for 6 hours then fried them. Tasted like chic fil a.
I know this may sound totally odd, but it works! I suffer from gallbladder disease and stones but other health problems are preventing the doctors from surgically removing mine. So I have found that during the times I am suffering an attack I can take a couple small sips of dill pickle juice and within 10 minutes my pain subsides and the attack ceases. I read some place that the acid and tartness in the juice somehow causes the gallbladder to respond and stop contracting as if it has produced enough bile. I don’t know for sure how it works but I know for sure it does work. Also I saw in an earlier post someone mention drinking pickle juice to level out blood pressure, it does this as well for me and also during the panic attacks I get during the gallstone attack it seems to sooth me.
You can use pickle juice to marinate chicken and then grill it for a grilled chicken that is similar to chick-fil-a’s. just add a little pepper and garlic and marinate for an hour before grilling. Delicious.

Jalapeno or pepper juice is a great chicken breast, pork chop, or steak marinade.
There is a hamburger joint in Shelby Forest [where Justin Timberlake is from] Millington, tn. They have a griddle where they fry their burgers and I have watched them clean it by pouring left over pickle juice on it. Wonderful idea. I also hear the Timberlakes are moving back to Millington to raise their first child!
I absolutely love your blog and find almost all of your post’s to be what
precisely I’m looking for. Would you ofder guest writers too write content in your case?
I wouldn’t mind composing a post or elaborating on a few of the
subjects you write related to here. Again, awesome web log!
Too many people have no clue that fast hair growth scalp therapy shampoos (of course with no sulfates, no parabens, no DEA) even exist. We now may experience longer hair and possess more possibilities. Undoubtedly worth researching.
If you’re talking about hair loss, hair damage, preventing skin disorders, fast hair growth, hair care in general, similar rules come to mind.
For the most part, you will want to avoid hair products and treatments that contain chemicals like parabens, DEA or sulfates.
What’s beneficial for your hair is healthy for your skin as well.
Clearly your content here is so accurate for so many reasons. It stays away from the accustomed mistakes and traps most fall into- getting ineffective alternatives. Thank you so much!
